An extract certificate includes the main details of the Act, whilst a full certificate includes all the details. You can view samples below.
Please note that in certain cases, including legal separations, annulments and divorces, the Public Registry Office will only issue full copies of the relevant certificate. On the other hand, there may be instances where only extract copies will be issued.
Extract certificates cost €2.50 and full certificates cost €9.95.
A Free Status certificate certifies that no act of marriage in relation to the applicant was registered with the Public Registry Office of Malta in the specified dates. Each certificate costs €5.15.
Public documents issued under EU Regulation 2016/1191 of the European Parliament and of the Council, such as birth, marriage, civil union, free status, and death certificates no longer need an apostille authentication and are now accepted by public authorities of another Member State. Citizens can request to attach a multilingual standard form to the public documents. For further information please contact the Public Registry Office on +356 2590 4200 or email [email protected]
In cases where certificates need to be legalised or apostilled, the documents must be authenticated at the Consular Services Office (CSO), Legalisation of Documents Unit, within the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, located at no.18, St. Zachary Street, Valletta, VLT 1133, Malta. There is an additional cost of €12.00 for this service. Alternatively, should you wish to avail yourself of this service, please visit the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade website
